Because we are then accused of anti-Semitism. It is a disgrace. US national interests are not always the same as Israel's.
No wonder we have so many enemies in the Middle east.

I am not aware of any anti-Zionists that are afraid to speak out. There are a whole load of them on this very forum. I do not agree that Americans in general are afraid to speak out against Zionism. I do believe that most Americans are not anti-Zionists.

Why would anyone want to argue against zionism, though? Why would they feel that the jews don't deserve a tiny homeland of their own?
For surely if any group in society need this, it is the jewish people. They've been thrown out of every country they've ever settled in and worse, have been the victims of pogroms, mass genocide, and hate crimes for thousands of years.
So isn't it just sheer logic, that they get to live in the tiny bit of land - Israel - which used to be their home, and where there have been jews for four thousand years, continuously? I just don't get why anyone decent would be anti this!
Maybe those that are 'afraid' to speak against it are worried because they know their motives are less than kind.

Largely because the term either refers to an obsolete political movement, or because they don't know the actual current usage and are trying to be politically correct.
Zionism originally was a movement to get a Jewish state created. That mission was accomplished in the 1940s, with the creation of Israel. Zionism was then obsolete.
It's current usage is mostly hate-based and used to refer to any statements by that are pro-Israel as propaganda. But many people think it refers to any statements that are pro-Israel.

Basically there are about 200 million Zionists in America alone. If you're against Zionists you are either KKK or Neo Nazi or just plain crazy. There's noting wrong with being a Zionist. Look up what a Zionist is, I think your hate and racist attitude has totally taken you over.

Some Americans are Zionists and some are anti-Zionists. Sadly enough the majority don't care. If it doesn't happen in America or doesn't directly affect Americans they simply don't care. Sad.

You can either take sides on this issue or not. I think those who don't are cowardly, and if you look back on history, you can see that the state of Israel is a just one. You don't give in to barbarians to stop violence. You give in to them to be ruled by them. They will not stop until they have everything they want - Palestine is just the beginning.

Because attacking "Zionism" is a frequent cover used by crypto-Nazis and assorted religious nuts to try to persuade mainstream people that they're not REALLY Jew-haters.

They are only presented with a biased view, many of them know nothing of Palestine, many are so myopic they do not wish to know, they just bleat the propaganda they have subjected to.
And any criticism is ignored and the critic is accused of being anti-Semitic, self-hating etc. etc. anything but allowing discussion.
