Well, not counting the school bus, the last time I used public transportation was when I was in Rome, Italy and our 11-person group took the Metro from the Pantheon/Piazza di Spagna to Via Cavour because we didn't want to walk back. The results were interesting (Roman metro doors don't have that wonderful little thing we Americans call a "sensor." I.e. those doors closed on my Italian teacher's arm and her students (the group) had to physically pry open the doors to get her out. It was also *really* crowded. But who cares? I loved every minute of it!! I'd *gladly* trade in my car for the opportunity to ride the Roman metro every day. Only €1, too! *So* cheap!

Besides, public transportation is a hell of a lot better than driving around town all day in your gas-guzzling Hummer/SUV/truck/grandma car and spewing your nasty emissions all over the place, y'know? Not to mention the price of gas nowadays...

It's been a few years. I've been blessed that I do not have to resort to public transportation, though I actually prefer it. Where I live it's over 70 miles from one side of the metro to the other, so I just stay on my side of the bay and do everything here! There isn't anything over there that I can't do here. Driving around gets old quickly it's fun at times but the novelty wears off.

If we had some type of light rail I might use it for smaller projects, like to go to concerts or other places where I wouldn't be carrying a lot of stuff around. Having to lug stuff around is the biggest inconvenience of public transportation.

Consider yourself fortunate that you can afford the high cost of maintaining a vehicle. In Virginia we have yearly inspections, registration, insurance, property tax, high gasoline prices, high tickets (now that we're paying a minimum of $700 for a violation), and you can be gauranteed that you'll put thousands of miles or more each year on your car, and that's even if you never leave the state. In Ohio I had emmissions testing, registration, insurance, and high gasoline prices. You're only putting a lot of miles on your car if you absolutely want to everything is more compact and not as spread out there, but it's still expensive. The bus you can get monthly passes and ride for like $400 a year. With a car though, you're paying at least 10 times that considering everything, and that's assuming that you own the car and aren't making payments! Not really sure where you get off with that statement I'd like to switch places with you!

The public transport in my town isn't all that great, so getting onto a bus or train is practically non-existent. I did take a cab home from the bar a couple of weeks ago, though. I didn't find it degrading. Driving drunk and causing someone else harm would be degrading.

There is nothing degrading about using public transport, unless you are a snob. I use public transport whenever, for any reason, I have to leave my car at home.

In January 2007 I took the Metro-Link then a bus to apply for a job as a tutor. The 2 hour trip to Los Angeles would have (according to map quest) taken 20 minutes by car.

I don't consider it degrading, but it sure is uncomfortable waiting in the heat, cold, rain, etc. And sometimes drivers are so inconsiderate! Once, I was standing there & got completely soaked on one side. ( I don't know if they did it on purpose or not...) Another time, my car was in the shop & I just could not find boots that were warm enough, so I was constantly stomping my feet to try & keep from being frostbit!

There's nothing degrading about using public transport. I'm sorry that's what you think. It is even better for the environment. So, it definitely works for me.

Public transport is the new "in thing." It shows you care about the environment and that you are smart enough to be saving money with gas prices above $3.00 a gallon. Degrading? No. I say cool and hip,
