Hi If it has only been a few days it is a musty smell you are smelling from the water not mold. First thing you have to do is dry the carpet. I am going to assume you do not have professional equipment for this. 1/ You will need to lift the carpet where it is wet. Where the carpet and wall meet there should be tack strip holding the carpet down.( behind carpet) You can lift the carpet off the tack strip with a pair of pliers grabbing the carpet fibre and pulling up. 2/ Pull the carpet back until the wet spot is exposed .At this point you should be able to see the under pad. Try to remove as much water as you can by either a wet vac or towels. 3/ now you will need to dry the pad by either lifting it out and drying it outside or leaving it in place and putting a fan blowing on to pad and carpet. This will need 2 or so days to dry. 4/ When to carpet and pad is dry you should not be able to smell it. 5/ Install the pad and carpet back down and I would recommend cleaning the carpet but that will be up to you. Depending on the size of the carpet you could rent a steamer and clean the area.. It's important to get the mold out of the carpet, so it doesn't dry and end up in the air you breathe that's harmful.. .If it's a small area you can scrub the carpet with carpet cleaner or foam and a stiff brush and use a wet/dry vac to extract the extra water.. You may have to repeat several times and use a clean water rinse so the soap or foam doesn't dry in the carpet that would leave a white soap mark residue... If it's a whole carpet or big area just rent the steamer for about $20 and do the whole rug.. It will be fresh and clean and mold free.... Good luck

I agree with pepplespro make sure when clean you have air stirring and the carpet completely dries or the mildew will come back.

If the carpet is in the house and on removeable;I would, use liquid tide to wash it real good and then take a dry and wqet vac and suck it all up.
Put alittle bleach in the mix it will help.

I used Febreze Antimicrobial, pulled up the carpet and sprayed the pad too. It worked like a charm (we had a pipe in the wall behind that room leaking and didn't know it).
