They are the same, but at the same time - they are not.
They both give you an equal opportunity, going into the work force, but let's give an example.
If you were to have a GED and went for a job opportunity, but another person did having a high school diploma.. and you two have equal experience in the job.. they're most likely to take the diploma-bearing person because of fear that you may not be as motivated being a possible drop-out student as opposed to one who stayed in school for a full education.

The Tests of General Educational Development, or GED® Tests, is a battery of five tests that, when passed, certifies the taker has American or Canadian high school-level academic skills. To pass the GED Tests and earn a GED credential, test takers must score higher than 40 percent of graduating high school seniors nationwide. Some jurisdictions require that students pass additional tests, such as an English proficiency exam or civics test.
The GED is sometimes referred to as a "General Equivalency Diploma" or "General Education(al) Diploma ." These and other improper references to the “GED” trademark are not authorized by the American Council on Education, which develops the tests and sets the rules for their use. Jurisdictions award a "Certificate of General Educational Development" or similarly titled credential to persons who meet the passing score requirements.
The high school diploma is the symbol of having successfully completed the basic education required by law for youths. Because of this, the presentation of the high-school diploma has become an adulthood rite, that is steeped in ritual. The high-school diploma is given to students at a ceremony called high-school graduation. Students who have passed their courses will have their names called out, walk across a stage, and be handed their diplomas. Sometimes students receive blank pieces of paper wrapped with a ribbon during the graduation ceremony; when this occurs the actual diploma is sent later by mail.
*NOTE In high school you have a much better chance for prepairing for collage.

I don't think they are the same. A GED is a very long test where as a high school diploma is studying, doing assignments, and doing tests.

They are not the same. You get a high school diploma from a school you attend 5 days a week and meet all requirements. Typically you do this by the age of 18. Anyone can get a G.E.D. They are for people who quit school. They are not sufficient for getting you into any GOOD colleges.
