Recognize that there is a lot of misery and sickness in this world but each child born represents new hope for a better tomorrow. Do your best to protect children of all nations.

I've had this thought many times before, especially when I was younger, but I havent thought about it in some time. If I am understanding you correctly, the thought is that there is a balance of good and bad that occurs within your lifespan, so that if you averaged it all out in the end it would be equal, or neutral. So sometimes something really bad is happening in your life, and then you think you must be "due" for something good, or vice versa. But I don't think I believe this anymore, if I ever did. First of all, good and bad are relative. Something that would have made me feel extremely upset, down, anxious, unhappy, etc when I was younger may have little to no effect on me now. Also, I think that as you grow older, you take a more active role in your life and your perspective of it, and you can learn how to see the good in most things, not be taken by the average "bad" thing, and in a sense control how you apply your awareness and perspective in life, living it how you want. Not saying its all one big buffet of happiness, but, as you get older, its just different...

A constant happy state of mind is unhealthy. We were created to feel all different states of mind, happiness, sadness, eagerness, etc. The question that should be asked is how can one maintain joy all throughout life, despite the natural depressive tendency that's caused by the flawed world in which we live. Joy is different than happiness.

Disclaimer: A happy state of mind 24/7 would require insanity. Below is my own philosophy and rules of conduct:

I believe that there is something to be learned from every person we meet.

That to help others is to help yourself.

To give without expectations is to avoid resentful bitterness and find peace (and receive blessings by surprise).

That learning is the very essence and purpose of life.

That we can decide how to feel about our situations, to be angry or not, envious or content, possessive or trusting, hurt or inspired. stagnate or active.

In all that we do there is the "butterfly" effect.

To do no harm is a moral obligation. To forgive harm done is divine.

To see the best in others is to bring out the best in ourselves.

To seek our own improvement rather then improving other people.

To recognize our weakness to avoid pitfalls.

To Understand our lack of understanding.

To claim superior knowledge is to show ignorance

Selfless service is the philosophy that can theoretically ensure everlasting happiness throughout life..... but it is not practicable to a 100%.... once in a while the self would raise its head and create unhappy moments...... one can of course minimize those moments through stern determination and discipline.

happiness is comparative. one must expecience sadness as well. meditation is a good way to achieve a centered state. and there are times i meditate on the great misery suffered by so many people in the world, to imagine what it would be like to really live that misery, and then realize my problems are truly minor. to put pressure on yourself to be happy all the time can provoke anxiety as well. so best of luck in your quest-and i hope you get some good answers-i'll be looking forward to them!

Choose to be content rather than to pursue happiness.

Either that or stay medicated for the rest of your life.

If you ever start to feel sorry for yourself think of all those poor souls who aren't as healthy, good-looking, even-tempered, intelligent, willing, wanted, sophisticated and tolerant as you and be thankfull your pony isn't spavined.
