There's a lot of ignorance in the world... and some of it has to do with December 22, 2012.
That's the last day of the Mayan Calendar. Since the Mayans are all gone, it's clear that the calendar lasted long enough. The Mayan calendar was based upon astronomical events.
Perhaps you remember that there were a group of people who were getting ready for the world to end in 1999, when the year flipped to 2000. People LIKE to think about the world ending -- apparently it makes them feel important to "know" something. There have been literally THOUSANDS of predictions of the end of the world, and, so far, EVERY SINGLE ONE has been wrong... obviously.
There is no more reason to think that the world will end when the Mayan calendar rolls over than there was when our calendar rolled over. But, that won't stop people from trying to sound knowledgeable and important, and making that blah, blah, blah noise all over until you want to choke them... or is that just me?
Anyway, relax. My bet on the end of the earth is when the Sun expands into a red giant star and engulfs the entire planet -- in a few tens of BILLIONS of years.
Of course, long before then, we will have been hit by many large comets and asteroids. That won't be the end of the planet, most likely, but, for many people, it would be hard to tell the difference.
You see, the world WILL end for each of us -- when we die. I happen to believe I will go somewhere else when I die. Your mileage may vary. But, since the place isn't crawling with dead people, it's safe to assume we either go somewhere else, or just cease to exist. In either case, we'll be done with THIS planet. So, try to have fun, enjoy yourself, and do good things for other people. That is how you make life COUNT. Counting life isn't anywhere near as useful -- or fun, for that matter. Be good.

In roughly 4 billion years the sun will basically run out of hydrogen to burn. Thereupon it will enter a new phase, burning helium. It will expand in size dramatically, becoming a red giant, engulfing the earth. Of course at any time between now and then a number of nearly as disasterous things could happen. But those would usually merely destroy all or most of the life on the planet. Large meteor impacts, gamma ray bursters, rogue black holes, nearby supernovae.. plus things we probably haven't dreamed of. Also if I remember right the Andromeda and the Milky Way Galaxies seem to be on a collision course and interesting effects are sure to happen when that occurs a couple of billion years from now.

Generally speaking, there's no particular reason to expect the world to end any time soon. Even if you just talk about life on Earth, a hazard of that magnitude isn't likely before, say, the collision of the Andromeda galaxy with the Milky Way over the next three-four billion years.
Unless, of course, the Americans decide those Chinese sumb*%@#es are going down. :)

The real answer is that the world ends when you die... because then you are no longer "in this world" or "of this world". The "world" will go on, and will probably last for several more billion years. The date you mentioned is when the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world. They didn't predict Cortez and the conquistadors, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

For you I'm guessing in 60 to 70 years. For me I'm guessing in about 20 to 30 years. For the other guy that answered I'm guessing 40 to 50 years. In 2012 we are going to see extreme economical stresses and devastating natural disasters but the world will go on as will you and I ( for now ).

Every time someone dies, that is the end of the world for them.
As far as this what we believe to be material Earth, I believe in God and I also believe that no man, woman or child here on this Earth know when it will end.

well no one can actually predict when the world will end.
it's kind of a confusing topic but,the world was suppose to flip about 100,000 years ago,I heard on a science movie,I think that's what they said.
But the world is simply fading very very slowly and will eventually be gone.
It's all in science,so you should get a science movie or something.
