Having a discussion with a friend, and the subject of limited income came up. Each took an opposing position. Where do you fall in this:

You have x amount of money, you can either buy groceries and pay what you can on your bills, or pay your bills and scrimp and scrounge and eat sparingly. What would you do? This is not a public assistance question , and food stamps, etc. do not play into the equation.

This is in regards to a family situation in which the family never eats fast food and does shop wisely using coupons, sales and Buy One Get Ones, etc. Not indicating that the family blows the wad on steaks and lobster, but merely putting three squares on the table.

It's both
Food is required, however that does not justify blowing a persons budget on food. I was taught to create a menu for the week using recipes that were cheap and in bulk so the meal would provide left overs like chili and casserole's and switch them up through out the week during hard times, and to never eat out. If you look back to when your parents and our grandparents were around they almost never ate out but always paid there bills and always had extra for others. I was always told eat to live, don't live to eat.

I would pay what I could on bills. You can eat cheap. They have the Ramon noddles that are only 15 cents and bread only cost $1 at wal mart or a local bread store. So I would pay as much as I could on bills and set may $10 - $30 aside to buy a bunch of noddles and eat sparingly until I got payed again. Speaking from personal experience here. Stay away from fast food it really adds up.

I think if I couldn't split it up and I had to do either one. I would pay bills because you can always go to friends or family to eat. Also most towns have soup kitchens to get a warm meal from or even churches that have free food drives.

OK, speaking from personal experience - I paid the bills (minimums if that was an option) and ate sparingly, or wrangled invitations to meals with friends and family (I became quite adept and have repayed the kindness over the years!).

i would pay the bills and struggle wit food a bit....collect those coins laying around and grub off of the dollar menu till my next check. in the long run u would be more affected if u waited on ur bills than ur food. sad but true because food doesnt have late fees or collection agencys

I'd split it up then use whats left and go grocery shopping at Aldi's or another discount store. Leaving the McDonalds and even big restaurants out of the question til things got better
