This is gonna be long but please read, I need help with this purchase. I just got hired with a work from home company and they have certain computer requirements. They require WINDOWS 2000, XP OR VISTA, INTEL PENTIUM II, 300 MHZ, 600 FREE, AND GREATER THAN A 256 PROCESSOR. If I purchase the following computer from dell, are the requirements going to be met? It has xp home, intel core 2 duo, 250 gb hard drive, cd/dvd writer? I don't know how to compare apples to apples. The price I was given for this system is 950.00 - ist that about right? Please help... I need to buy this system asap. I would rather have the xp than the vista at this point.

Let's break down the requirements:

Operating System: Any new computer you purchase will likely ship with MS Vista. You may find some with MS XP but these are becoming more difficult to find as Vista is the latest version.

Processor: I don't think you could find a new computer that doesn't meet the 300 MHz requirement by the company. 300 MHz computers were in mass production sometime in the mid to late 90's. An Intel Core 2 Duo is far better than the PII 300 MHz.

600 Free (are you talking disk space?): Not sure on this one. If it is disk space, this sounds like they want 600 MB of free space, possibly to install some application they provide. Modern disk are measured in the GB range so they will easily have enough disk space for you.

256 Processor: I'm guessing you mean memory (RAM) here, not processor. If that is the case, most vendors are shipping systems with at least 512 MB RAM. If you happen to find one with less, choose the upgrade to at least 512 MB RAM if you are working with MS Windows XP. If you are using MS Windows Vista, try to get about 2 GB RAM.

$950 price: That would buy a pretty good computer for the average user and up to the mid range gamer. You could probably find a suitable computer to exceed their requirements for around $400 if you shopped around.

** Edit **
Just did a quick look at the Dell site and the Dell Inspiron 531s (the low end desktop offering) exceeds the requirements you mentioned. The cost when I checked was $349 without a monitor. If you really want to cut corners, check with a local computer shop (not a chain store, just a small computer shop) to see if they have any used computer monitors and you could pick one up very cheap.

The system that this company requires can be met by a 8 year old computer. You probably couldn't find a used system that is doesn't met those requirements. I'd say the one you picked out will be fine. Infact you can probably down grade to the $400 destop from dell and still have more then enough power for there application.

well your company computer specifications:

WINDOWS 2000, XP OR VISTA,
INTEL PENTIUM II, 300 MHZ,
600 MB FREE Hard Disk Space

this is really old computer specifications, (you will not find P2 anymore in the market only if you visit liquidation store.

in this case .. you do not have to buy something really expensive.

you can buy a computer with the same specifications for 100 US though ebay.

buy if you look for something good and cheep try this

Go with XP for sure. Have a client who has to use his XP computer to complete transactions because his Vista computer will not work and there is no patch yet.

The computer you describe is great and either meets or exceeds the requirements.
