While an airman in West Germany, Cash saw the B-movie Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison (1951), which inspired him to write an early draft of one of his most famous songs, "Folsom Prison Blues".

Because of Cash's frequent performances in prisons and his rowdy lifestyle early in his career, many people wrongly thought he had served prison time. He never did, though he battled addictions to pills on and off throughout his life, and was arrested for bringing amphetamine pills in his guitar case across the Mexican border in 1965.

Nope. when he got busted in Mexico, he was locked up but not for long. A few hours and he got out. In a police cell and interview room is were he stayed, He only sung and made records in prison. he was busted for buying a large amount of speed tablets the ones that Elvis took (and properly still is).

He was in jail for drugs for a few days but never in prison. He loved singing about prison because of his passion for inmates and their lives
