Contractors damaged phone line causing me inconvenience and a loss of business. I have been in written contact with contractor, a major UK one, and they have quoted legal precedents stating that contractors are not liable for paying compensation on these grounds. How can this be? Sureley there must be some way I can claim. UK laws apply

Of course they will tell you that. Sue them and you will win. Just properly document your actual losses.

If cutting the phone line was part of thier work, even temporarily, then you have no case. You might go to the ones who hired the contractors, but overall, you have no case.

HOWEVER, if cutting the phone line was not part of their work plan, then you do have a case. Contact a solicitor at once.
