you can't. just concentrate on your own growth and maturity. focus on making yourself better. when you are healthy, such things don't bother you as much.

I know that this is frustrating, but most of the time you CANNOT change a person (sadly) whether they are your mother, father, brother, friend, gf/bf, etc. In order to change, the person needs to realize on their own that he or she has a problem. You can say things such as, "When you act this way, you upset me" or "Have you thought about how you sound to others when you say or do the things you do?" Peoples' experiences have made them who they are, and it is usually very difficult to change. All you can really do is either put up with them and talk to them when they upset you, or cut your ties altogether if that doesnt work by telling them that you cannot deal with being around someone who's emotionally unstable.

That's one of those instances where you usually cannot teach an old dog new tricks. Adults, i'm assuming this person is in their 30s maybe? If theyre at least that old and still don't act like a mature adult then I believe it would be a waste of time to try and do something about it.

You definately have to accept them for who they are or not because the chances are slim that they are going to change. The only way to even influence a person like that is to set an example and set boundaries as to what kind of behavior you will allow around you...

That's a very good question. My mother-in-law is this way and so is my sister-in-law. You have to throw them in and let them fend for themselves is what I found out. Their biggest problem was finances. They never paid for anything themselves and what-ever anybody got them, it was never enough and they would trash it. They also never apologize for anything that they've done. There are a lot of "adults" in this country that are the same way.

YOU don't get someone ELSE to do ANYthing -- THEY have to make up their minds to...some people NEVER grow up, unfortunately. you just have to decide if you accept them as they are or not.
jjjjjjjjjjj -- you don't know WHAT you're talking about -- I am MUCH more responsible than either of my husbands, although my current is much better than my first

Sounds like my Mother-in-Law...who is now 62.
My general impression is that once one is past 40, they have no hope.
