why specifically do you ask if it is fair?
Jack the Ripper was NOT a Freemason.
Even if he were, would one bad Freemason mean we should not have them in the USA? By this logic we should not allow any group as every institution know to humanity throughout history has had horrific members. By this logic we would not have any freedoms or liberties.
Is there something else besides a mis-informed reference to Jack the Ripper that makes you ask if it is fair for America to have Freemasons?

Why shouldn't the freemasons have a right to exist in the U.S.
The reason the Mormons were forced to leave Missouri so suddenly and move on to Utah was they were wanted for fomenting sedition... they tried to overthrough the elected Missouri Government by force of arms....
Sorry Mitt Romney... but this is a part of Missouri History and you can't re-write it.
Anyway... by your logic, since the freemasons shouldn't be allowed to exist... then should the Mormons also not be allowed to exist?
When you start down that slippery slope of picking which part of the first amendment you want to accept and which part you want to ignore... then you are using the Bush 'Playbook' and it's another freedom gone... and Bush hasn't left us that many.

Do you think it's fair for groups like Peta should be able to run around and shower people with red paint if they chose to wear a fur coat? The Free Masons are a peaceful group who do a tremendous amount of volunteer work in there communities that most people like you don't know or care to read about, but instead you probably read some secert society memebership group book or books crap and have formerd you own ideas about the group without really knowing what there all about. Does memebership have it's priveliges it sure does, but don't most organizations that we chose to join do?

Do I think it's fair for a country founded on freedom and the right of people to form their own associations to have a private group that gets together and discusses religion and philosophy....
Yes. I think it's fair that people can join whatever organization their want. The NRA. The Freemasons. The Sierra Club. Freedom of association. What people do with that is a different question.

Well, there definitely seems to be an advantage in life if you are a freemason, but this is America and people are allowed to belong to any organization of their choosing as long as nothing illegal is going on.

I think it would be unfair if they were not allowed as Freemasonry is present in every other country in the world.
So no one is missing anything in terms of having Freemasons.
Freemasonry, as practised today, originated in England, Scotland and Ireland (them being the 3 mother Grand Lodges) and from them spread around the entire globe.
So in answer to your question Yes is it fair, as every other country has them as well.
