Don't they also hate the Scots and the Irish? And Australians? and just about everybody else?
Except Paul Potts, isn't he Welsh?

I'm English and I love the people of South Wales, very friendly and outgoing. On visiting North Wales, however, the reception was different - I seemed to be viewed with some suspicion! When people have told me that they don't like the Welsh, the only reason they could give me was that they didn't like the way they speak - their accent 'gets on their nerves'! It's interesting to note that gene scientists claim to have found proof that the Welsh are the 'true' Britons and that the English are descendents of Anglo-Saxon invaders who did their best to wipe-out the Celts. The findings suggest that between 50% and 100% of the indigenous population of what was to become England was wiped out, with Offa's Dyke acting as a "genetic barrier" protecting those on the Welsh side. So it seems that it really is a case of 'two tribes', ie., some English don't like the Welsh because they're still there, and some Welsh don't like the English because of past history! But when it comes to Rugby, it's just friendly rivalry...... isn't it?!!

I am English but was brought up in Wales - many years ago a friend and i walked into small gift shop in a small welsh village talking English - the women behind the counter spoke in welsh to one another basically saying they needed to keep an eye on us English girls as we would probably steal !! we walked out the shop speaking Welsh - they were so rude.
Other than that the Taffs are not different from any other place.

Do they? My English friends have kept that a secret until now!! They don't as far as I know, it's just a myth.
UKNative- you are right unfortunately. The people of North Wales also have an issue with South Walians who do not speak welsh. My father worked in Bangor for 6 months and was treated like an outcast because although he was welsh, he only spoke English. The Welsh language is now compulsory in schools I believe, it wasn't when I was in school.

Well I suppose you make a change from those who claim we are all controlled by the Illuminati, Jews or the Muslims. But really the Welsh? I suggest that rather than a conspiracy theory to explain the problems we have, it is far more likely it is the "balls up" theory. I do wonder if the explosion of those who are following one silly conspiracy theory after another is more because of their wish to believe that some group actually know what they are doing. In fact, one thing that I have noticed is that all of these conspiracy theories depend on the perpetrators being endlessly clever. I think you'll find the facts also work if you assume everyone is endlessly stupid.

It's usually the Welsh who aren't too keen on the English and even at the highest scholarly levels, won't accept that it was the French (Normans) not the English who invaded Wales in the middle ages. Then there is all that anti English graffiti. The English, on the other hand, insist on characterising the Welsh in drama tv etc as sly, underhand and not very honest.

I am English and I do not hate the Welsh. In fact I love Wales and visit there often. I love Llanbedr and I am visiting there in September. I think it was quite wrong to phrase the question as if all English people hate the Welsh. Maybe some do but this is definitlely not an opinion held by most English poeple.

This is an extremely difficult one. It does seem to depend at the moment whether you go to North or South Wales. In places such as Cardiff, issues like this tend not to arise by my experience. Up in the north however, it's a different story. In recent years, issues have arisen to do with increasing house prices, people not being able to buy them, having to move away and such. This completely ignores the fact that wages in North Wales are abysmally poor, but there we go.
Recently, a lot of pressure groups have been formed in Wales to protect the Welsh language. Morrocan Roll has said on these forums many times the language is dying. I agree with him. However, many people wish to keep it going, and that I have no problem with. The noble aim of saving a language has, sadly, been hijacked by a minority who have diverted this into a race issue. The way that English people are being treated in this country at the moment makes me thoroughly ashamed to be a Welshman.
One final point - when it comes to people starting conversations in Welsh, this is nothing new. It's not meant to be a way of making a statement against the English or people against any other nationality. It's more of a way of attempting to keep the language going. Policies such as this are encouraged by many local public and private companies - Gwynedd Council has had a fair bit to say about this subject in recent years, for example.
It is not a simple issue of claiming that the Welsh hate the English. Such old rivalries should have been consigned to the dustbin of history years ago, though sadly such xenophobic and simple-minded attitudes remain in this country in abundance.

All hatred stems from a difference of opinion. Without going into the histrionics of both countries these disputes go back a long way. If those who find hate in their heart then it is because they hang onto something that cannot be changed by seeking happiness outside of themselves. When we look within deeply into our hearts and find the Godself, the love will flow and hate no longer exists. We are ALL ONE!
love and light
