Both are electromagnetic radiation. The laser pointer produces light within the human visible spectrum (or you wouldn't see it). Infrared light has a longer wavelength.

Infra red is the same as normal visible light except that it has lower frequencies that can not be seen by the human eye. It is made in the same way, by lamps, LEDs and fires. If you want to see infra-red, just look through a camcorder at a remote control. You will see the flashes.

Infra-red lasers are very destructive and can burn through concrete and steel.
The pointer is simply a single frequency of red light.
