the cog is hands down a lot better, but then if you have never seen the royal gorge it is nice there are some original pipes from the gold rush still left.

Completely different choices.

Royal Gorge is a short ride at the bottom of a canyon. Scenic, but really no view.

Pikes Peak Cog is a 2-3 hour ride on the side of Pikes Peak, a truly enormous mountain. Fantastic views.

Not close, in my opinion. Durango/Silverton (or Chama) is (was?) a 3 hour ride with a little of the character of both both, on an old steam train. You'll need reservations. Many people think the whole thing is a little much for one day, and you can take a bus one way (which is not a choice on Pikes Peak). I don't know the details of the washout, but they have a website.

I rode on the Royal Gorge, which offers nice views of the top of the gorge & the suspension bridge & it has a nice little tape recording to listen to about the history of the area - as well as really nice tour guides.... I did it as part of a rafting trip I was doing in that area - it was a nice ride, but I personally think that you'll enjoy the view from the top of Pike's Peak better. I also did that trip on a different day.... I liked the Cog/Pike's Peak trip better than the Royal Gorge train ride, although the rafting was alot of fun in the Royal Gorge area... I'd try to do both if you can!

Also a railroad at Chama, one at Durango (which is now partially washed out)
Why not see them all?
My favorite is the Durango/Silverton.
