If you are talking about best TEAMS and not individuals, I think you could make a case for the '98 Yankees, just as well.

114 wins were the best ever for a championship team.
125-50 including the playoffs, an unbelievable 75 games over .500.
No weaknesses anywhere in the lineup, rotation or bullpen
Great defensively.
Did all the little things like moving up runners, taking lots of pitches, walking.
They were In the middle of winning 14 straight World Series games, so they were no fluke.
A #9 hitter with 98 RBI - lets be serious!
Probably, only Derek Jeter will make it to the hall of fame but all gamers and clutch players.

Boy, there's always one guy like me to ruin the party

The greatest MLB team of the modern era was the 1906 Chicago Cubs.

The 06 Cubs had a better win/loss record than the 27 Yankees

The 06 Cubs had a better ratio of runs scored to runs allowed than the 27 Yankees

In computer simulation, the 1906 Cubs are the best, 1927 Yankees 2nd.

I agree with what Kris wrote. They're definitely the most successful franchise of all time, and to argue that would be silly. All you have to do is look at the 26 championships and the huge list of superstars that have worn the pinstripes throughout the years. However, to suggest that they've operated on a level playing field is incorrect. I think it's admirable that the Steinbrenners spend whatever it takes to win, but they're not putting themselves in the poorhouse by doing so. They're spending that money because they make an enormous amount off the team. Even if a small market team like the Royals or Rays decided to win even if it meant no profit, they simply wouldn't have the revenue stream needed to compete on that level. As for those bashing the Yankees, they're just jealous and/or ignorant. To argue against their success makes absolutely no sense.

It has to be up there with the greatest teams of all time. They were 110-44, swept the Pirates in the World Series, and just take a look at the line-up below. 4 of the starting 8 positional players went on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, along with 2 of their 5 starting pitchers. 6 hall of famers on one team? Right up there as one of the best ever if you ask me.

pos NAME BA HR RBI
1B Lou Gehrig .373 47 175 (HOF)
2B Tony Lazzeri .309 18 102 (HOF)
SS Mark Koenig .285 3 62
3B Joe Dugan .269 2 43
OF Earle Combs .356 6 64 (HOF)
OF Babe Ruth .356 60 164 (HOF)
OF Bob Meusel .337 8 103
C Pat Collins .275 7 36

STARTERS W , ERA
R Waite Hoyt 22-7 , 2.63 (HOF)
R Urban Shocker 18-6 , 2.84
L Herb Pennock 19-8 , 3.00 (HOF)
L Dutch Ruether 13-6 , 3.38
R George Pipgras 10-3 , 4.11

"Sixty, count 'em, sixty. Let's see some son-of-a-b*tch match that." - Babe Ruth on September 30, 1927

After stating all of this, I'm a Red Sox fan ... and even I can appreciate how good this team was.

Once again - Yankee fans living in the way distant past. How many of the 26 titles have you been alive to witness?
There is no way to know what was the best team since they don't play against any other winners. So I say the 69 Mets since they were blessed..

They are considered by many to be one of the best but there are many other teams that could be considered as well. The final answer always comes down to each fans frame of reference.
