What are your opinions on the Atkins diet?
I am currently studying both the diet itself and the controversy surrounding it.
I need your opinions so I can see what the general public think and so that I can include your views in the study.
Thanks so much!!

Just so you know, I'm not actually on the diet myself...it's for my coursework.

Hi there,
In my opinion, based on the research I've done, Atkins is a very healthy diet and a great way to lose weigh, improve cholesterol, improve blood sugar, reduce blood pressure and increase overall health.
We believe that a lot of the controversy stems from:
1) The fact that there's not really a lot of commercial interest in Atkins. For the most part, serious followers of Atkins avoid processed, commercial foods and concentrate on fresh, whole foods. This means that the big food conglomerates have a lot to lose if lots of people start eating this way. So they pooh pooh Atkins every chance they get.
2) Big Pharma doesn't like Atkins either. Dr. Atkins was heavily into complimentary medicine, preferring to use nutritional and non-pharmaceutical remedies whenever possible. Many people following the Atkins diet are able to reduce or eliminate their insulin, statins, and other medications. A lot of minor complaints also seem to abate when on Atkins as well, meaning we don't spend as much money on drugs.
3) A lot of the major nutritional and health associations are heavily subsidised by the food and pharmaceutical industries. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.
4) It's hard for established dogma to get turned around. Despite the mounting evidence in favor of Atkins, established researchers, doctors, nutritionists etc are reluctant to admit that they may have been wrong all this time, despite the proven failure of the low-fat regimen

Don't do it...... if you wanna lose weight be sensible and don't do crash diets. Crash diets yes you lose the weight fast but usually you'll put twice as much back on....... Eat lots of fruit and veg and small amounts of meat and low fat dairy..... Drink lots of water and exercise hey presto you'll be losing weight you'll feel energetic and you'll have beautiful glowing skin......
And if you want weight to come off and stay off you should only be losing 500 grams to 1kilogram a week!

Its a good diet if you want to lose weight quickly but its not really that good for your health and once you go back to your regular diet you can gain the weight back very easily.

It's very bad for you. Not healthy. Dr. Atkins was grossly overweight and when they did the autopsy on him they found all sorts of health problems like clogged arteries

Everyone that I know that was ever on it did lose a good bit of weight, but as soon as they stopped, the weight came back on, plus some.

It's a BAD idea! Humans are omnivores...We require BOTH meat and vegetables...fruit included.
There have been many people who have developed bad conditions from Atkins.
Eating meat only is a bad idea.
