Hi, I'm 26, due to go for my smear test tomorrow and I'm absolutely petrified, I don't know why I just am. The last time I went it was a student (male) that did it, guided by the doctor. It's such a humiliating thing to have done, but by a man it's even worse! He was very sympathetic to how uncomfortable I was and I think that's what scared me half to death. I get one done every three years and they've always come back normal, but I'm so worried that it won't. I'm being silly I know, suppose I just wanted someone to say it'll be fine.

You're quite within your rights to ask for a female nurse or doctor and you're allowed to say you don't want a student there, they should have asked you first.
If you're not happy when you get there, explain your concerns and rearrange an appointment so you feel comfortable. The best thing you can do to make it easier is relax.

A pap smear refers to a pattern of cervical wall cells that are gained with the aid of scraping the cervix for the duration of a pelvic examination. docs usually additionally visually be conscious the cervix for the period of the smear to discover any abnormalities. in actuality you lie on your decrease back or your area on the examination mattress/table. It will be fine. At least you are getting it done to make sure you are healthy. Its better to know, than to guess.

As far as having a student male do it, I bet that sucks. You are in control though, you can ask for a female if you really wanted one. Just explain to them what you just said to us.

I bet its very humiliating, but you are doing the right thing. Even us guys feel humiliated during oru checkups for getting a plastic tube and a hand shoved up our rear ends. Then after they pull it out, they hand us a box of tissue and say "Go ahead and clean up." While they sit in the room with us as we squat to wipe our ***. The doctor actually told me that 90% of the men he sees never come in to get the checkups until there is something wrong, and then its usually too late.

So you are doing good, you are doing what you should.

Oh and again...

It'll be fine, see ya tomorrow :)

Just try to remember that doctors carry out lots of cervical smears all the time and have seen it all before - they think nothing of it, so just try to think about something else - something nice like your plans for the weekend or something - then it will be over before you know it. I am sure the results will come back normal if you have smears regularly - I had one come back borderline once and had to go for another one, but then that turned out to be normal anyway. Remember too, the point of cervical smears is to catch pre-cancerous cells, so that things can be detected early, so try not to worry.

Aw you poor thing, I'm only 16 and have thought about cervical smears and am scared for when I have to go (which would be 18 right?)

But anyway, I'm sure it will be fine, we all have to do it evenutally. :)
