Are there any good reasons other than love, and who needs the approval of church or state for that??

I would think that if someone was going to get "married" or have a "gay civil union" just for a tax break chances are it would be to get "married". Being gay is hard enough on us, we surely wouldn't have a civil union with someone just for a tax break. That would be something that "straight" people would do just because it's so easy...get a marriage license, find a judge...bam, tax break. Gay people will tend to take this union more seriously than most of the straight people. I will bet there will be far less "divorces" in the gay community.

To have a union for the reason of a tax break only is not asking for equal rights. That would be considered special rights.
There is more to the issue of same sex unions or marriages, than financial gain. There is the ability to have the right to make choices regarding your partner's health and medical care. At this time, a hospital does not have to allow someone into the hospital room or even inform them of the status of their partner. This also means that you have no say at all in funeral choices.....that will be left up to the surviving members of your partner's family. That is not right, plain and simple. If you make the choice to spend your life with someone, that should include the good and bad times.
There are also inheritance rights. At this time, if someone loses their partner for any reason, they are not guaranteed to have anything the two shared. That would include the home, automobiles, personal affects, access to a joint banking account, etc....again...this is not right. Even some heterosexual couples have difficulty with this if they are not considered ''married'', but the government.
I wish people would realize that this issue is not about monetary gain. It's about being given the right to care for someone you love and share your life with.
Who has the right to place a value on that?

No, of course it is not worth it to get married just for a tax break. But to be allowed to see my SPOUSE in the hospital; to allow him to immigrate to this country legally; to allow us ALL of the many, many rights associated with marriage, that is another story.

Same sex marriage is not a way to get tax breaks which are very limited, by the way.

Marriage is between one woman and one man. If gay people would have their own civil union, that would be fine by me. I would not question other people's reasons to get married. Reasons can be wrong too.

How about we take a look at the percentage of straight marriages that end in divorce before attacking the gays rights to be with the one they love¿

that's not why we want to get married. we want equal rights as guaranteed by the constitution. those of us in committed, monogamous relationships deserve the same rights as other citizens!
