It's not so popular here around the cities and bigger regional centres - or the heavily populated east coast.

But I've spent a LOT of time working and living in a fair few places across the outback in the past couple of years and believe me, it's everywhere there!! It's the prime meat you can find in most outback general stores and supermarkets...they're simply usually too far away for fish, steak, etc, so 'roo meat is next best.

However, for visitors to Australia, it's not heavily marketed at all, as a lot of people don't like the thought.

We have an enormous population of kangaroos though, so we're not putting endangered wildlife at risk eating it...it's just the easiest kind of meat to get particularly out here in the bush!

And it must be said, it's actually not bad at all. Bit like beef and can be a bit tougher at times - but not bad at all, really. Cheap, too.

Most outback pubs are proud of their 'roo steaks!!

Yes - we do. But it is not something we do on an everyday basis like beef or lamb. Usually you have to go to restaurants or else buy the meat at selected butchers.
Like venison, kangaroos that are for human consumption are farmed for that purpose. They are not simply "grabbed" out of the bush. We don't eat those ones.

It tastes like meat - bit darker and qite tasty actually.

You don't think you could eat it? Why? It's just meat. When it comes to you table on a plate - it looks just like a steak.
