I agree with Uncle Joe. I can't see an election happening any time soon. In addition to the financial reasons that Uncle Joe refers to, Brown will want to be in power long enough to build up a record that he can comfortably defend, rather than going into an election campaign having to defend the legacy of Tony Blair.

Look for an election in Autumn 2009 or Spring 2010. I think the outcome will be the same whether the election happens this year or in two or three years time though. Labour will win, but more narrowly than at the last election.

I don't think the Tories are in anymore turmoil than they have been for about 18 months. The only reason Brown might call for a General Election so soon is because he is on a honeymoon period. Call it in October and we are stuck with Brown beyond 2010. Call it next year and we will more than likely have a hung parliment.

I think it's pretty unlikely. The Labour party doesn't currently have enough cash to fight an effective election campaign, so they would want to build up a decent war chest before going to the country. Otherwise they risk being heaily outspent by the Conservatives and seeming ineffectual in the election campaign.

Brown has also waited a long time to be PM so he won't want to risk his position by calling what he would probably consider a premature election. Spring or autumn 2009 are far more likely dates for the next election, I think.

Why not. The Tory Party have not done them selves any favours with their lack of support for David Cameron, so Gordon Brown will strike while the iron is hot.
And David Cameron has not done his party any
favours, by wanting to become a marriage
guidance councillor, or a family councillor.
Bigger issues Mr Cameron, get your thinking
cap on.
