Since 1995, Jackson and Sony/ATV Music Publishing have jointly owned most of the Lennon-McCartney songs recorded by The Beatles. Sony later reported that Jackson had used his share of their co-owned Beatles' catalogue as collateral for a loan from the music company. Meanwhile, Lennon's estate and McCartney still receive their respective songwriter shares of the royalties.

Well originally, Northern Songs was the company that owned the rights. That was while Brian Epstein the Beatles manager was alive. After his death, the Beatles - notably John Lennon and Paul McCartney - formed Apple Corps, which took on all the song rights.

Subsequently, Michael Jackson stepped in and bought some of the rights, and I think I'm right in saying that Sony has an interest in some (not entirely sure about that though).

Oddly, the Canadian owned telecommunications giant Nortel bought partial rights for "Come Together" some years ago for a television and internet advertising campaign. They paid a small fortune and shortly afterwards had to lay off many of their staff due to a downturn in the market.

Maybe we wouldn't be having this discussion if piracy had been around in the 1960s, however. See my article on piracy and the Beatles at:

years ago Michael Jackson bought the rights to the early Beatles songs. But how ever, Paul, Ringo, John and Georges wives own the right to the later songs.
