Why is it that I know hear that alot of people have been brainwashed into thinking that desexing animals is ok and that we can treat them whatever we want. Declawring, spaying, neutering whatever you call it, you can come up with any name you butchers out there who do it. Im a retired Vet in her late 40's and il tell you that in my lifetime I have always been against this in-humane act. People have ask me to desex their pet and I just refuse full-stop. Most people out there think that it is irresponsible, I honestly think that they have their heads turned on backwards. Im also shocked and disappointed at the green groups and the RSPCA for allowing this barbaric ritual to happen. People out there who follow upon this act do not want to spend time with their pet, instead they see their pets nature as a nuisance therefore trying to mutilate to solve the problem.

What also disgusts me the most is that I have never come across another person in the same profession as me agree with me, they only do because they make money. This sickens me

I can understand why they do it, im a vet, they should come up with something better, oh, and to the people that think im not a Veterinary Surgeon, well i am, and to prove it you can ring up the ACVS ( Australian College of Veternary Scientists) and ask for Mrs Elaine Lowe for more information about my credentials just mention Eve of Galston, she knows all about me

While I agree with you that declawing is inhumane, there is nothing inhumane about spaying and neutering. The animals suffer little discomfort after surgery, are under general anesthesia during it and there are pain meds available if the animal is uncomfortable. If you were really a vet, you would know this. The cruel and inhumane thing is the uncontrolled breeding of dogs and cats that end up in our pounds and are euthanized later. Dogs that are bred purely for fighting is hardly humane either, and puppy mills that breed hundreds of dogs in small cages are as well. For you to say it's inhumane is rediculous. I have a hard time believing that you're really a vet.

Well although I see what your saying a couple things trouble me.

One the fact that none of your colleges agree with you may mean they do not agree with you, perhaps you are the one living in a dream world.

Two if you are so certain that you are right in your feelings quit waisting your time name calling and judging and come up with a solution. Just a thought. Merely a different angle on your dilemma.

OK after reading other comments i have a third problem with your theory. Lets say that neutering shouldn't be done. Does this mean your OK with putting down hundreds perhaps thousands of animals because no one wants them? Or are you maybe thinking we can teach them to wear condom's? Or I know maybe you have the capacity to care for all of the illegitimate pets. And further more maybe having a bunch of in bred retarded animals would bring peace and joy to the world?

Wow I thought you might have a clue about what your suggesting until I actually THOUGHT about it. May I suggest a little on your part!

In a perfect world it would be nice. And I'm sure all people do not do this because they believe their pets sexual behavior is a nuisance.

But animals depend on humans. For the most part most people do not deserve to have a pet. Hundreds of Puppies and Kittens are being dumped off only to suffer a cruel death. I live in the country were this happens all to many times. I have made so many attempts to save animals when I can. I'd like you to see the poor starving puppies someone dumped off deep in the woods - only to finally find their way to my house by the barks of my dogs. Helpless creatures full of ticks and fleas, dirty, bones sticking out, no energy like a puppy should have - GOD IT"S SAD!!!!! I'd like to catch the person who does this! God forgive me for what I might do to them. This is a harsh reality.
I have had my male dogs neutered. Its less exspensive and does not seem as invasive as spaying, never the less I found it necessary to control the population of un-wanted animals. As a vet you think you would understand this. You should have experience in how people are. Are you not aware of the numbers of unwanted dogs and cats (pets). I belive animals deserve so much more than we offer!!!!!!!!!

You honestly need to get rid of your attitude and use your knowledge to help solve this. Put your energy and knowledge to better use!

Look! lets step back into reality. If everyone took responsibilty for their own pets and made sure they were not out breeding, your opinion might have alot of followers. But as long as bad pet owners outweigh good pet owners. There has to be some kind of control. Even Animal Rights Activists agree w/ colonizing cats.

darlin its not to make money its to control the population of animals that people wont or cant take care of.in a world of fast track business people love their pets but at the same time have lives. if they were to allow their pets to go out and be hussies and come back and have babys then the babys would be the ones to suffer as the pwners wouldnt have the time to nor the patients to take care of them , raise them, teach them and then find good homes for them. they would end up roaming the streets and starving getting in to trash cans and making a nusents of them selvs. all because you dont want to fix them ...
if you had a daughter would you let her go out and hussy around to her hearts content, come home pregant, have a baby (under your roof) then make you have to take care of it while she goes out and does it again and again?
we all may be human but sweetie we all think the same when it comes to sex... some humans dont think as do most animals... we as humans have birth control but our pets dont so we as humans have to keep it under control by desexing our pets cause they cant do it them selves. we have so many cats abd dogs that desexing some wont hurt the population only help it....we are over populated in cats and dogs... the animals we need to populate are the ones that are almost extinct...
be a smart vet and help controll the pet population... its not a bad thing... really its not... its better....
cheers

You're a very strange vet,if you are one.Animals that aren't fixed are either going to have multiple litters, which will just add to the surplus of unwanted pets, and they are also more prone to uterine or prostate infections, cancer, and other disorders. There is absolutely nothing cruel or unusual about it,and it is certainly not barbaric.I have had dozens of animals fixed, and none of them have had any complications and were back to feeling just fine in less than 48 hours. No wonder you're retired at such a young age;you probably lost all of your clients!

I don't see much validity in your argument.

When an animal is desexed they are many benefits to it. They make a better pet because they don't have "urges" to distract them. Overall the animal is healthier and animals do not have sexual identities like humans do so it's not going to alter their personality if they are desexed. Not to mention, if the animal does breed, good homes are not guaranteed to all the animals.

You make several claims on how horrible you think this practice is but you have no evidence to back it up. You just keep going on about how terrible it is to the animal but you don't say why.

I can see your side but i have to say overall it is best to desex animals. Our first cat was a stray cat and she got pregnant and had five kittens. i wanted to keep them all. I even said I didn't want the new car my husband was going to buy for me if I could keep them all as I didn't want to seperate a family. I lost the arguement. One went to husbands family and lives like a baby. It sleeps in a pram or the kids beds and has everything. One went to my uncle who would forget to feed it and only give it food scraps and later went missing. Another went to a friens and that went missing. his cat a few months later got pregant again and just before she was to have them went missing and I never saw them. we didn't get her desexed because my husband said it was not up to him to prevent her from ever being a mother. While looking for that cat I adopted a cat from the pound and she is desexed. There are too many cats being killed in shelters every day and I have to say that i think it should be compulsary for animals to be desexed. When i adopted my cat microchipping was compulsary but desexing was an option.
don't think desexing is barbaric as it is like a human having an operation. you don't feel when it is done, it hurts after the medications wears off but then it heals.

-when my mother's dog had a tumor, would you have been against removing it? it's against nature. well, she had it removed, and he was also neutered. my dogs are both neutered. i wouldn't have it any other way. did you know that some humans also get 'desexing'? some people just don't want kids. i don't want kids. i'm on birth control. that's against nature, too. gee, is my head turned on backwards? maybe the reason no real vets feel this way is because they know you're wrong.

i don't like declawing though.

How about so they don't breed and bring unwanted cats and dogs into the world.
In my city they put down 500-700 animals a week.

I do agree with you about the declawing though.
