Do I need PAP smears or other tests for cancer? I had stage 1 cancer twice already and it was treated by D&C.(Many years ago) But after my hysterectomy I just thought I didn't need to think about it anymore. My sister thinks I'm wrong. Does anyone know the answer to this?

The answer is yes you will still need pap smears every two years due to the simple fact you have had abnormal cells in the past.

Although you have had the hysterectomy and may have had your cervix removed, you don't say, they can still take cells from the very end of the vaginal vault where your cervix was removed. It still shows results.

You need to continue to have them to avoid cancerous changes in the vagina.

Your sister is correct. You still need to have a pap smear done. If you don't have a cervix anymore they do the pap smear taking from the vaginal wall. This will screen to see if vaginal cancer is occurring.

Also, most doctors require their patients to still get pap smears even after a hysterectomy.
