Common sense gave an excellent answer. Fear conquered greed would be the very simple way to put it. Wall Street is scared frightfully that the mortgage problems are going to snowball into a major disaster of monumental proportions. And there is some sound basis for their fears.

If you want others;
Market was "over bought".
Sub Prime sell off.
Market went up too quickly.
Valuation was too high.
Fear won over greed.
