Say you were running out of battery life on your primary battery, and you wanted to switch it out to the secondary battery.

Can you just switch them out while the laptop is fully on? If you pull out the battery, and immediately replace it with the secondary, is this safe? Will it cause any damage to the hardware/circuitry or anything unfavorable to the notebook in any way?

Thanks in advance!

okay so i got conflicting answers again. i might just have to try it myself to see what happens. I was just wondering if they had built in a small reserve on notebooks so that you could hot swap batteries like this, so that when you pull the primary out, you have just a few seconds to replace it with the secondary. It sounds like a good idea.

no you cannnot switch the bat. while the comps on. WHY WOULD YOU? you'd loose all info when it was removed.

It would reboot on the insert of the new BAT.

It wouldn't damage the hardware or setting more than likely,

but

watch and then let me know what you think

There really isn't a point to putting your laptop on while switching batteries. By the time you switch the batteries off, the laptop will of shut off, and all the memory on the RAM will be gone, so you'll just have to turn it on again. However, if you want to do it this way, no, it will not cause any damage at all. Once the hardware loses power, it just stops working and turns off.

It may well do damage, as the circuitry is designed to be switched off before you change it. Also, if you pull the battery out it will have the same effect as switching off it's power, the machine will stop in an unclean state, and this can cause file corruption or even damage to the hard drive.

You can't just swap the batteries you will need a power cable to keep the laptop on while you swap the batteries but if you do that it is perfectly safe, if you don't have a power cable pluged in the computer will shutdown and you will need to turn it on again...

DON'T REPLACE BATTERY WHILE YOUR LAPTOP IS ON

When you feel its time for the switch... HIBERNATE your laptop (This will keep the RAM image intact).... then replace the battery... again switch on the laptop.... you will begin from where you left....
