Yes. You start by understanding two things: the parts of poetry (meter, rhyme, terms, etc.) so you understand the mechanics behind what you're about to read, and the history of poetry.

You can do this by buying a book on poetry basics...they even have a "poetry for dummies" edition that covers many aspects of poetry. Once you've read these primers, then buy and read the Norton's anthology of poetry, cover to cover. Yes, it's thick and covers hundreds of years of poetry...but that's the point! It takes you from the earliest poets up to today's poets. In doing this you will see the evolution of poetry through the ages, and understand that what may be in vogue during one period is out of style the next. However, it also shows you that just because someone doesn't think it proper to rhyme, or not rhyme, etc. that there are many famous poets who did both.

If you take my advice that far, then get yourself a copy of "Best Loved Poems of the American People". It will give you additional depth because it covers styles not included in the anthology; things like "poems that tell a story". Once you've finished that one, you'll know enough to go out and start buying and reading the collected works of others....and hopefully, start writing some of your own.

It's like studying music...some just want to listen, others study it to better appreciate it...the same goes for poetry. The more you understand about the structure and the subtlies, the more you appreciate the poems. Just like nobody appreciates a good guitar riff like someone who plays the guitar.

I hope I've answered your question...you have a world of poetry ahead of you, enjoy

For all of you who say poetry doesn't have to be studied, have you ever taken a friggen lit course? yes you have to study.
Yes you should explicate, and I'm sorry, but it gets terribly hard to do. True cliff notes versions of poetry or old college text books. These resources go very far into explication, also study the authors, for instance I recently learned Whitman was gay, and that explained a lot about his work?

Grr to all the ignorant folks out there.
Good Luck babe xoxo

i might visit college and study it. in case you want to assessment approximately poetry, your maximum suitable guess is to assessment it, examine poems and look at different preparation that doesn't look like it means something. desire you detect a good place. additionally, it is quite helpful to seek for most of the main suitable in each and each of their fields and merely study what they do. Audre Lorde, Fran Quinn, Mari Evans, Donald Justice, the checklist is going on...Jung did some extreme writing, then Wordsworth and those different classical/romantic writers. it extremely is merely going to take a splash diagnosis.

well you can try to read it, but it may be difficult to stay focused. I can't consume large quantities. Perhaps seek out a structured environment like a class or book discussion group. Have someone read it aloud so you are forced to pay attention to it.
