The electron configuration of Astatine (As) is [Ar]4s24p3. The empty 4d orbitals can participate in the bonding to go beyond 3, to AsFr5. The type of bond, since the electronegativity difference is somewhat in the middle (relative to ionic and covalent bonding), is polar covalent bond.
