After watching Panorama last night i'm still reeling at seeing the footage of what they call Happy Slapping where they go and start to beat up people and video the fights on their moblies to post on to the Internet, You Tube etc,

My god they love to see people being beat up so severely that blood is spurting out everywhere to the point where the poor person being beat up loses conciousness which can lead to death or very serious injury .

I'm not a particulary religious person but I remember my grand mother telling us when we were young that all of the things that are happening today would come to pass as stated in the book of revelations saying that in the latter days Nation will rise against nation, kingdom against kingdom there will be lawlessness people will be lovers of money.

(a) Kids are animals these days due to bad parenting, bad diets, and too many laws that "protect" them from being upset or disciplined in any way.

(b) You believe what you want. It's all a load of old tosh. Revelations my ar$e!

.

I'm not sure about the bible part of the question but as for the youth of today, I truly believe that so many kids are being brought up by, well, kids!!! The parents are to blame for an awful lot of what goes on in the streets these days. Also all the media attention things like "Happy Slapping" get, turn it into a craze rather than a crime. I live abroad now and when I read some of the news from the UK, I literally gasp with shock. It really is terrifying what things are coming to when people are too scared to walk the streets for fear of being beaten by children.

I say forget the ASBO, bring in real prison sentences for anyone who commits a violent crime, if they are big enough to maim or kill someone then they are big enough to take the consequences, regardless of age. Punishment for a crime should reflect the severity of the crime and not the age of the culprit.

Whatever peoples' views on religion I think it is fair to say that when organised religion is no longer part of peoples' lives then society will suffer.

Previous generations were brought up more strictly by parents, with the support of the Church, schools and police. Children were expected to be well mannered and polite and, thus , a credit to themselves and their parents.

Nowadays, all forms of discipline are frowned upon. Despite the mayhem which we see and read about amongst modern youngster, the Left have still not worked out that if all morals, ethics and boundaries are removed from society then you no longer have civilisation. I am not talking about 'spare the rod and spoil the child' or 'children should be seen and not heard' but the fact that it has gone too far the other way. Children rule the roost but, nevertheless, they seem to be much more unhappy than kids of previous generations. Apart from so many of them being obnoxious they also seem lost. I think that is sadder than almost anything.

It really saddens me when I read, or hear,of the gangs that roam about just looking for mischief. A special needs college was broken into in the area where I live. Twice in twenty four hours they trashed every room. Broke cisterns so the water flooded everywhere
bringing down ceilings. Computers, televisions. they trashed everything that was breakable. It
is going to cost a quarter of a million pounds
to get this college up and running in time for the
new term. Three youths are being questioned,
If they are the guilty ones, they should be made to help clean up the damage, and go
before the students of this college, and apologise for what they did.
I saw part ot the programme you are writing
about,I was sickened by it all. Slaps on the wrists are not going to work anymore, they want to play tough, then the punishment should be tough also. More police on the beat to break up gangs of youths, and more community
policing.

simple answer
the breakdown in society started at the same time as national service ended
i am not advocating a return to armed service, rather service to the nation and communities in general
the discipline involved would generate self discipline, and moral fibre, which is sadly lacking
in a great many households there is little or no parental control- people with no standards breeding more of the same clones
schools have had all effective ways of enforcing standards stripped away from them
unfortunately we are in a downward spiral and haven't reached the bottom of the fall as yet
public disorder and hooligan behaviour will get worse

whilst i am an amnesiac agnostic (can't remember what i don't believe in)- the bible sets out a good set of rules for people to live by

yeah I think the media hads made things worse - doesn't mean things like this didn't happen before (though maybe the gravity of this has worsened?) but now there are sites where this stuff can be shared and once someone does it the human nature of competition and one-up-manship kicks in. Group mentality is awful, things that start off as an assult could end in murder in a group setting as each member eggs another on . . . unlikely that as individuals people would go that far. Google Stefan Persaud who was beaten to death by a gang of youths in south london - pretty sure the intent was not murder at first but things escalted horribly.
People have alos used the theory to explain Jamie Bulgers death asking if either of the two boys alone would have gone as far as they did together?

There are reasons for everything that happens, but I think kids are following role models. If the media and celebrities say it's cool to steal, hate, abuse drugs, kill, etc. and a kid holds bad people as role models then they probably admire these things and hold them as ok to do. At any rate, they ultimately make the choice of what role they're gonna play in life whether good or bad. Kids are impressionable at a young age and what they are tuned into has an impact on who they become as adults. Parents who let their kids have free reign over media should definitely think twice before they end up in prison or worse. If you love your kids, exercise some discretion and don't let them have access to negative media at home or by way of friends at a young age. Get involved.

there's a lot more to bringing up a child than discipline. There's actually teaching your child what is right and wrong. And when this kind of question comes up, the first thing that everyone says is "beat them" Now I do smack on occasion, but there's a hell of lot more to childrearing than smacking.
Our society has been eroded. Our children have as role models, well, us. And we drink too much, watch and approve of violent movies and tv shows, and actually, show little genuine compassion and kindness.
Mother are encouraged to work rather than birng up their children, single parenting is the way to go.
We don't know how to bring up out children. And the government is no help, with its petty laws.
I don't approve of the "whack-a-matic" days of old, and I do believe that children deserve respect and love. They also deserve two loving, kind, financially and emotionally secure parents who put their kids first.
As for Revelations, well I can see where you are coming from. But I don't believe it is all bad and we can do something about it.
In our own lives we can be better role models to our children.

I am not a deeply religious person either but I am a Christian and I do believe what the bible says and agree with your grandmother. I do think alot of what we are seeing in the world today especially with our youth and the middle east was prophesized in the Bible for sure.

They call them fight clubs here in the US and it is actually illegal. Just shocking to see that it comforts teens supposedly to inflict pain on themselves. Its just like the cutting epidemic. It makes you feel good to cut yourself up? I don't really understand that at all. I lived through some horrible things as a teen and surprised I made it through mentally yet I still never felt like I had to hurt myself for control over my life. I just can;t wrap my head around alot of things these days. Just think it is a sign of what is to come. Half the problem however with our youth nowadays is we cannot discipline them. I just found out the other day that it is now illegal to wash your childs mouth out with soap. You have to use something edible if you choose to use that method? Spanking is not allowed anymore. Making them go to bed without dinner is not allowed. I survived all of the above and feel I am a better adult for it and well probably because I was disciplined up until my teen years by one parent is how I got through the horrible teen years with the other parent who didnt believe in discipline.

Good question. I think kids feel disenfranchised. There isn't a lot kids can do.

Where I live, local kids have been hoping the council will build them a small skateboard park - it's been on going for a couple of years and every time a place is earmarked, residents object and .... no skate park. Housing estates however, spring up over night (lots of profit involved I imagine)

I truly believe all things in our society reflects our society therefore, the behaviour of some of our children reflects a chronic lack of respect and care. Our society appears to think more of 'celebrity' than it does of it's kids (in some cases at least)

I also think when mothers joined the workplace the raising of children became considered a second rate job and was passed on to strangers (childminders). I spent 24/7 with my two and it was hard work (sometimes drove me nuts!) but I felt it was the only way I could really get to know them, them to get to know me and for us all to have mutual respect for each other. I don't want to sound holier than thou on the subject, I chose to stay at home raising my kids because I genuinely saw it as my responsibility.

I'm not particularly religious either but your gran was spot on.

I think we just need to start 'liking' our young folk not demonising them.

Sorry to waffle but it's a pretty mega subject with no one solution.

I think you might be right about revalations, but the real problem is the background of these kids. I was always taught to keep away from fighting and like and so never got myself involved in anything messy like that. I would go as far as to say I could be eaten for sunday dinner. I have a loud and angry mouth at times, but it has never gone further than that.
I was brought up adopted by Catholic parents and despite moaning most of my teenage years about their rules, I wholly respect them. My life would have been ruined if it wasn't for them as I know the culture of my natural family and I think the best I could of hoped for was a life like those kids and a job in tesco's. I am miles from that life because I was brought up with religion and morals, it makes alot of difference. Troubled with a lack of faith is the downfall of our society. You don't have to live by faith though, you can still do perfectly well but I appreciate mine now and i'm not a bible freak by any means. I appreciate nature as rule.
Society is definatley lacking faith. My children go to sunday school because it is my belief that it is better to give it to them but make it clear that it is not the only way than not give it at all.
