Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (Sinhalese: , Tamil: இலங்கை; known as Ceylon before 1972) is an island nation in South Asia, located about 31 kilometers (18½ mi) off the southern coast of India. Originally[citation needed] known as Heladiva, it is home to around twenty million people.

Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia and has been a centre of Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times. Today, Sri Lanka is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation, with a fifth of the population following faiths other than Buddhism - notably Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population (around 80%), with Tamils, who are mostly concentrated in the north and east of the island, forming the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include the Muslim Moors and Malays as well as Burghers.

Famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, rubber and coconuts, Sri Lanka boasts a progressive and modern industrial economy. The natural beauty of Sri Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage make it a world famous tourist destination.

After over two thousand years of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by Portugal and the Netherlands beginning in the 16th century, before the control of the entire country was ceded to the British Empire in 1815. During World War II Sri Lanka served as an important base for Allied forces in the fight against the Japanese Empire. A nationalist political movement arose in the country in the early 20th century, with the aim of obtaining political independence, which was eventually granted by the British after peaceful negotiations in 1948. Since then Sri Lanka has enjoyed a stable democracy and continuous economic progress, despite the ongoing conflict between the Sri Lankan government and a separatist militant group known as the Tamil Tigers in the northeastern parts of the country

The actual origins of the Sinhalese are shrouded in myth. Most believe they came to Sri Lanka from northern India during the 6th century BC. According to their tradition, the Sinhalese people trace their origins back to the union of a lion, or a "sinha", and a North Indian princess, whose descendants became the bloodline of Sinhalese Royalty.

Buddhism arrived from the subcontinent 300 years later and spread rapidly. Buddhism and a sophisticated system of irrigation became the pillars of classical Sinhalese civilization (200 BC-1200 AD) that flourished in the north-central part of the island. The Sinhala language is related to Sanskrit, as is Hindi. The first Sri Lankan kingdom had its capital at Tambapanni, but later shifted to Upatissagama and then to Anuradhapura. The Buddhist religion reinforces the solidarity of the Sinhalese as an ethnic community. In 1988 approximately 93 percent of the Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, and 99.5 percent of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka spoke Sinhala. The most popular Sinhalese folklore, literature, and rituals teach children from an early age the uniqueness of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, the long relationship between Buddhism and the culture and politics of the island.

The Tamil kingdoms had sway over the emerald island, in Chola period; novels by Chandilyan and Kalki, great writers with research ability, and value in their creations, point to that in their works. Other than that, Budhism had the Lankans under its spell! But leaving aside these 'bondages', Lanka was independent, from Ravana's times, Ramayana days!

i might could desire to trust the above publish. We suck at tests performed distant places yet to be honest we don't get that many video games.we count on some international type gamers to maintain us.We probable have the final bowling line up however and our fielding is fairly good. Our batting lacks intensity,i'm able to in straight forward terms call 2 wide-unfold gamers in the gang and a pair of greater which could have the aptitude to be international type in the subsequent couple of years,so in basic 4 batters.I excluded Sanath out reason he will retire quickly. i can not have faith we drew a chain in WI,that grew to become into meant to have been a standard victory yet we tousled.New Zealand we drew against and an analogous tale in the 2006 excursion to England.Aussies have had the timber on us for a on an analogous time as. i might say India is greater powerful than us on the 2nd in basic terms reason of their batting line up yet we are truthfully greater powerful than England :p.Has India gained a try sequence in SL yet?First time they gained a ODI sequence in SL grew to become into this year. yet in the subsequent couple of years Sri Lanka has the aptitude to be the final in the international. We in basic terms could desire to discover a pair greater good batsman, some 19 year olds could desire to be tried..

I don't think it ever was. After all the national entity of "India" was only created after WW2. Before that (untin the "Raj") it was only a group of independent kingdoms in a state of constant warfare.
