I have an old laptop that still runs pretty good beside the slow (64Mb) processor and the annoying pop-up from Spyware that I never be able to get rid of....
I'm thinking of upgrade the memory and get the Spyware problem fixed so that I may be able to hang on to it for another while for doing HW and some other light work: word processing, playing music...
However, I'm afraid whether is it worth it to go through all these or not?
Secondly, later I found out that people could convert laptop hard drive as an external HD with the purchase of an enclosure. But then it doesn't seem to be a good deal at all to buy an enclosure for $30-$40 when you can get a brand new external hard drive for around $80.
What is the best way to make use of my old laptop? Upgrade? Or Chop it up?
If upgrade, what things and how much am I looking at?
If chop it up, what other things I can get beside converting hard drive as external HD?
Thanks for any suggestion/resources/ideas.

Some people have converted the screens into electronic "picture frames" that they stream pictures to. Others have turned them into "jukeboxes", since they are still capable of playing music.

64 MB is the amount of RAM, not the processor speed. If the processor is at or above 333 Mhz, the RAM may be expandable, all the way to 256 MB. That kind of computer would still be useful for surfing the internet or doing simple tasks, though it would be pretty poor for most modern games.

If you cannot upgrade it, you could still try to put Linux on it. Damn Small Linux, or DSL, is perfect for old computers with very little RAM. You might be surprised at what that old clunker can still do!

First go to the manufacturers web site and see if you can upgrade your ram , if its only 64 mbs now; how much can you add? If it can handle only 128 or 256 then your going to have to purchase it from them if you still can. Its not sold at stores any more.Remove spy ware and use as a work station and possible connect a gps for travel Good Luck

Your a funny man!

Do you really think that your old labtop would with-stand all of this new and up-coming technology that will soon require 1GB of DDR optional RAM?
Memory prices will go down, eventually so that higher paid software can update on all ram vendors, the indusrty is behind on speed, therefor the indusrty is upgrading our technology on speed improvements. Keep your labtop! Don't let people still your information, unless you know how to wipe your drive, clean.

Usually they are expensive to upgrade and a new up to date one bought on offer is not much more. Like the idea of trying Linnux that has mileage.

strip out the harddrive , buy and external case and use it as an external harddrive.

Use the screen and make it into a digital picture frame for your wall or office

That thing couldn't have that big of a hard drive anyways, 5gigs at most. I'd say donate it to some charity or something.

If you are interested in computers, try loading Linux on to the laptop and have a play with it.
