David Bowie has done many different types of music, including more acoustic folk type stuff, rock, especially glam rock, dance music, electronica-ish music, and even weirder experimental music.

He changes with time and this is best embodied by his song "Changes."

As for his lyrics, they're usually weird, yes.

If you want more strings and piano type songs check out his album Hunky Dory. The best songs on this album are:

"Changes"
"Oh! You Pretty Things"
"Life on Mars?"
"Quicksand"
"Song for Bob Dylan" (only if you like Bob Dylan and his lyrics)
"The Bewlay Brothers"

If you want something more acoustic try "Space Oddity," though the lyrics are about... space... and odd stuff... heh.

His song "The Man Who Sold The World" also became famous after Nirvana covered it, in their unplugged set.

Another one of his best albums is Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, which the song Ziggy Stardust is from, but most of the others are like that one, so check it out if you liked that song (not sure what you thought of it, it seems like you only said you hated "Rebel Rebel").

If you want some of the more experimental stuff the album "Low" is a good example of that. Some interesting tracks off that are the first five (the ones afterward get weirder):

"The Speed of Life" (Instrumental)
"Breaking Glass"
"What in the World"
"Sound and Vision"
"Always Crashing in the Same Car"

The song "Heroes" is also well known and acclaimed.

If you want some of his dance era stuff from the 1980s try "Ashes to Ashes" or "Let's Dance," though I'm not necessarily a big fan of his 1980s stuff, though I still have to explore that era.

I hope that helps.

If you want to try some of his songs, just look up the compilation album Best of Bowie.

I'd say from the Space Oddity to Hunky Dory it was focused mainly on acoustic style, and then from Ziggy Stardust and onward Bowie was more into the glam rock style, which featured more hard driven electric guitar sounds. However, Bowie has had many different eras and personas, each one with a new style.
