My mother had small periods each month whilst pregnant with me. It didn't happen to me, but I have heard of several women that it has happened to. Mum said she didn't have any real pain, just discomfort, and they happened about the same time as her period would have been due.

YES you can. I know a few women who got pregnant and still menstruated!

**

Menstruation usually stops when a woman is pregnant. However, in some cases, a woman might have a period with less blood or that lasts fewer days than usual and still be pregnant. Your confusion is understandable because these signs can lead women to believe they are not pregnant. However, various kinds of bleeding can occur in early pregnancy. Women can get some spotting in their first trimester:

* when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus;
* if the pregnancy is abnormal in any way [i.e., ectopic pregnancy (implantation outside of the uterus, such as in a fallopian tube), a threatening miscarriage]; or,
* from bleeding as part of their menstrual cycle (this is extremely rare).

Period while pregnant- no
Bleeding while pregnant- yes and call your care provider ASAP

This is why it is not possible to have your period while pregnant: the bleeding while you have your period is due to the uterus discarding the uterine lining it does not need as you are not pregnant. You can however, have spotting or bleeding while you are pregnant. If there is enough blood to make you think you have your period, that is very worrisome-call your midwife or doctor immediatly.

A small amout of bleeding is normal for some women but any more and a doctor should be consulted. It wouldn't hurt to mention any bleeding to the ob/gyn next time they're seen to be on the safe side.

Yes, it is possible to still have your cycle while being pregnant. I have also heard of others having more of an irregular cycle just before they found out that they were pregnant.

Yes, some women have periods throughout. But you need to get this checked out. I bled in both my pregnancy's but my children were fine.

It is occasionally the case that hormone dips in early pregnancy allow what is in effect some breakthrough bleeding to occur at period time. This can occur at 4,8 and 12 weeks but very rarely later than that!
