I lost my birth certificate and need to know, if anyone other than me could use it? Perhaps identity theft?

i think not really.. because birth certificates or other documents come with supporting docs and valid IDs so you don't have to worry a lot. =)

Yes, unfortunately they can. Basically the most that an individual would be able to do in most cases -- so long as the ONLY info they have is your Birth Certificate-- is get a new SSN in your name. They may also be able to gain a passport in your name. You must hope that they also do not commit crimes in your name because once they have obtained a passport and SSN, they would also be able to get a driver's license and basically live in your name.

Unfortunately, I don't know about your bank's policies, nor those of your credit card company(s) so I do not know whether or not they can gain any more information or actually steal anything.

Also, the birth certificate you have lost is not your true certificate. In reality, Birth Certificates are kept on file with the government, and individuals only have certified copies of them. So, you can apply to receive a new copy if you need one.

I really do wish you the best of luck and I'll be hoping along with you that none of the worst of outcomes can befall you.

Yes. If you lose your birth certificate, then you have legally ceased to be born... you no longer exist.

Seriously -- no, losing your birth certificate cannot get you into trouble, and by itself does not create any significant risk of identity theft. Because birth certificates are public records, the piece of paper itself is not what's important.

For identity theft, they would need a lot more personal information to be able to impersonate you and thus pretend (financially) to be you.

I am sure that they could seems like everything can be used against a person. I would think that there is some way to report it lost. I would contact all of your creditors and keep monitoring your credit reports.
