Most states have their guidelines spelled out in PDF documents on their ".gov" websites.

I can give you some guidance.
After "X" amount of time it will come to a point where it will be considered a common law marriage... it really does have more problems than you think.
In other words, you can be held responsible for his debts and vice-versa... no matter how stupid or WHEN they were incurred.
Without that marriage certificate, you cannot collect life insurance if he dies. You cannot make any decisions for him if he is in an accident and cannot speak for himself... you can't unplug him if he's a vegetable... you would have to wait until his family gets there, and they may not make the right decisions.
If you two have kids, that still means that one parent will have to pay child support to the one with custody.
If you are in a common law marriage, you will still have to file for divorce to get him out of your credit info and all that.
You might as well get the marriage certificate so you can get the legal protections and benefits.

Last time I check, Tennessee was still part of America. Just because he has a child with someone else doesn't mean he can't move on with his life and if that includes living with you in sin then he can do that. It's not a very good example you are setting for the kid but then I guess he never has set a good example for him in the first place.

What kind of legal advice do you need? Where do you live?

Your local government should have a website that has that sort of information available to you online.

I think that perhaps your citizens advice bureau might be more helpful than the Internet.
