i was watching mythbusters a while back, (b 4 i knew alot about guns) and they did the "bullet proof water" episode and i found out that anything over super-sonic speed would break up on impact. so at what speed does something become super sonic?

761 miles per hour... or 1225 kilometers per hour.

whatever you fancy ;)

Something is super sonic when it travels faster than the speed of sound. Which is technically relative.

At sea level, at a temperature of 21 °C (70 °F) and under normal atmospheric conditions, the speed of sound is 344 m/s (1238 km/h, or 761 mph, or 1128 ft/s or 661.5 kt).

So anything FASTER than 761mph - though for the sake of environmental variables one could say 800+mph.

This kind of thing is really probably why there's the option to measure speed a different way.

The mach number. A way of measuring the speed of something relative to the speed of sound in the ambient environment, divided by one.

High speed flight can be classified in five categories:

sonic: Ma=1
Subsonic: Ma < 1
Transonic: 0.8 < Ma < 1.2
Supersonic: 1.2 < Ma < 5
Hypersonic: Ma > 5
(For comparison: the required speed for low Earth orbit is ca. 7.5 km·s-1 = Ma 25.4 in air at high altitudes)

At transonic speeds, the flow field around the object includes both sub- and supersonic parts. The transonic period begins when first zones of Ma>1 flow appear around the object. In case of an airfoil (such as an aircraft's wing), this typically happens above the wing. Supersonic flow can decelerate back to subsonic only in a normal shock; this typically happens before the trailing edge.

Here's what gamefaqs says on how to unlock him: Chaos emerald gear: Get gold on every mission in mission mode. Super sonic: Use chaos emerald gear on sonic So yes you can still use regular Sonic. I'm not certain on Super's abilities!

At the speed of sound, of course. Which differs in different materials. In a gas, the speed of sound is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature, and inversely proportional to the mass of the molecules of the gas. (Not surprisingly, it differs from the average speed of the molecules by only a small geometric factor.) The theory of speed of sound in liquids or solids is something that I have not looked into. The speed of sound in air, at normal temperatures, is about 340 meters per second.

Actually both the answers above are wrong. Something does not become supersonic at the speed of sound. It becomes supersonic when it EXCEEDS the speed of sound. In air, supersonic flight, means exceeding the speed of sound in air.

330meters per sec that is around 1000 ft per sec.
