John Walker Lindh broke the law. But 'the American Taliban' wasn't a terrorist, and he deserves clemency.
The president's power to grant clemency -- in the form of either a pardon or a commutation -- is much maligned and occasionally abused, as was the case when President Bush used it to keep his colleague, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, from facing even a day in prison for lying and obstructing justice. But the power has its appropriate uses as well, and the case of John Walker Lindh calls out for it.

Can you believe this nonsense? Comparing a traitor and terrorist to the great patriot Scooter Libby? What are they smoking?!

Everybody is so unaware of what he was charged with. At the time he was arrested, he was fighting the Northern Alliance--BEFORE the Bush administration became involved in the conflict. One day he was an Afghani freedom fighter, the next he was an enemy of the US. Nine of the ten charges against him were dropped. He was convicted of aiding the Taliban in 2001--the same year that the Bush administration sent the Taliban $43 million in aid. There is NO evidence that Lindh intended to murder Americans or to assist terrorists in doing so. He was fighting in another country's civil war. He became a scapegoat for the post 9/11 hysteria.

I don't have an opinion on Scooter, as I have not followed it. But why the Left want Lindh out, is so that he can campaign in 2008 for the Democrats. You know how it is, "I was a good guy, but I was misled. If I were a real threat, Bush would not pardon me. The Taliban are cuddly people, all except the manipulative ring leaders, blah, blah, blah, blah..."
If Bush falls for this nonsense, he is just plain stupid.

Sweetie--the Libs are NOTHING without 'victims' to rally around. Looks like they're 'testing the waters' here to see how many sheeple they can get behind THIS new ridiculous cause. Poor little JOHN PHILIP WALKER LINDH, a/k/a "Suleyman al-Faris", a/k/a "Abdul Hamid"--"has spent a quarter of his life behind bars"......LOL! He is about 27 or 28. Oh, and he is a member of the taliban--who seek to destroy us! Just something to remember come election day.

Here is another quote from your source...
"the charges against Lindh originally included conspiring to commit terrorism. Those charges were dropped, however, and Lindh today is serving time not for any act committed against the United States, but for violating a Clinton-era presidential order that prohibits providing "services" to the Taliban. Lindh, who converted to Islam as a teenager, joined the Taliban before Sept. 11, not after; he did so to fight the Northern Alliance, not the United States. Lindh never took up arms against this country. He never engaged in terrorism; indeed, his commitment to Islam leads him to oppose the targeting of civilians."
It takes some real american heroes to target a dumb kid and to praise a lying political sneak who has been around enough to know better, as a great american hero.

By the sound of it the same thing you are smoking.
I personally do not agree with clemency for Lindh (liberals are allowed to have different opinions - we encourage discussion and debate from different viewpoints) but to call Libby a patriot is an insult. Lying to protect your boss when you know your boss has done the wrong thing is not laudable.

Yes, I can believe the nonsense and it comes straight from your posts. Scooter's not being compared to Lindh; the jail time is. "Liberals" aren't trying to set Lindh free, this is just an editorial opinion in a newspaper. It's the opinion of the writer, it's not a national movement by "liberals". Conservatives need to knock off the dishonesty.

Anything to hurt America. They think surrender is the only option and are just trying to gain favor with the Muslims they want to turn the country over to.
Little Johnny was "just" a member of the Taliban? Weren't those the guys who liked to shoot women in the back of the head as the half-time entertainment at soccer games? He joined the army of a foreign country which then became a legitimate target of American military action. He was therefore defacto fighting against America. His membership in the Taliban and his armed presence on the battlefield during an engagement with American forces is all the evidence needed.
From the article, the quote "Lindh has spent nearly a quarter of his life in custody for his foolish decision to pursue his religious convictions by aiding another country in its civil war." is an odd reason to advocate clemency. Seems to me fools who wage war for their whacked out Islamic perversion are exactly the people we are fighting against. The quote is just more evidence Johnny is right where he should be.

Libby is in no way a great patriot. However, JWL should have been executed for treason with a bullet in the head... and have the bill for the bullet sent to his family.
