I'm trying to build my own computer for the first time and I'm a bit confused about which power supply should I go for. The board and case are both ATX and my question is, will a ATX12V power supply fit in a ATX case or work with a ATX board?

Yes that'll work.

The ATX12V means that it is ATX form factor, which is the same as your case and motherboard, and the 12V means it has a 12V rail in the power supply.

Make sure you get a known make though, like Antec,Thermaltake, Hiper, Enermax, Corsair etc.

And make sure you buy a power supply with enough power running through it.

ATX means form factor, you either get ATX or MicroATX (sometimes abreaviated as uATX)
You only need an ATX : Case,Powersupply,Motherboard.

So the rest of your components you just need to check compatibility with other things.

Email me with your component list if you like and ill check over it.

The ATX and micro ATX boards use the 12V ATX power supply. Better get a power supply complying with ATX V2.2 or 2.3. It has high efficiency (runs cooler) and has strong/dual +12V rails. Retail power supplies are 150mm wide and should readily fit most cases. Do not rely on minimum wattage recommendation. Higher rated power supplies run cooler, last longer and give you plenty of elbow room for upgrades.

could you give examples of the power supplies you mean?

if what your calling an "ATX12v" PSU is what i think it might be, then that wouldn't work at all. but that might not be what you mean.

personally I like the Antec Truepower line of PSU's.
