Good example is why is it called Wikipedia and the answer is in wikipedia if you look for it. Yahoo answers should take points away for such questions as that. Hmm maybe some people will get negative points and not be able to do anything. Oh wait that would mean that someone would have to take responsabilty for themselves and that isn't how its done now adays.

because it's nice to get people opinions on things. for example, you just asked a question that could not be answered by google or wikipedia.

I'm almost inclined to agree with the second poster too, but I mean come on - this is a Yahoo! website after all, there's a freaking search bar at the top of every page that allows one to search the whole internet, and have their answer in less than 5 seconds. And you don't have to register, or wait around for 2 days to have 60 people tell you the exact same obvious answer that they copied straight from some random website and passed off as their own.

And seriously, who has heard of the internet, but not heard of Google. Or any of the hundreds of search engines for that matter. The default page for Internet Explorer is MSN, which has a search engine. IE has a search tab (and in IE7, a search bar), as well as Firefox's search bar. It really is an unexplainable phenomenon.

Unfortunately, there is no real answer to your question. Some people are just plain stupid. Even if it were moral to punish people for being stupid, I don't believe such a system could effectively stem the flow of the intellectually challenged in any useful manner. Such is life.

Idiocy - Never Underestimate the Power of Stupid People in Large Groups.

*Edit: to the people below, who maintain Yahoo Answers is useful - nobody's doubting that, online forums are a good resource to get opinions on a topic, or answers that aren't easily available via Google. But seriously have you actually read some of the questions around here?
"I have a knife stuck in my chest, and there's red stuff coming out. Should I see a doctor? My friend once had a knife in his chest, and he died. What do you guys think?"
Funnily enough, the guy who answers "wtf are you doing here, see a doctor immediately you idiot!" is the one who gets the thumbs down. The Best Answer goes to the moron who says "hey that's cool we should be friends!".

Oh and FYI, here's what Wikipedia says about Yahoo Answers:

I agree, people ask some really stupid questions. But like the other user said (the second answer), I believe it's just that people are uneducated about the Internet.

And yes, I hate how people say Wikipedia is not a good source, even though the community is so large that any...I completely forgot the word...any bad editing, mistakes, and/or...jeez. Malicious editing. I cannot think of the actual word though. But yes, many of the answers are stupid, and I agree with the second answerer.

I don't think it's laziness it's just the general user is to under-educated about the internet and is ignorant about where they can find the answer. Or they saw some stupid dateline special saying the wikipedia can't be trusted because anyone can edit it, despite the fact that PC magazine reported it's just as reputable as encyclopedia britannica.

Why don't people stop buying milk from the store and start milking their own cow? Oh yeah, that's right... nobody knows how to milk a cow!! And nobody knows how to use the internet either!!

So I guess we shouldn't offer people an easier way to ask questions. (Just make them learn, right?) I guess it would be better off if we all stopped using Windows too, and just reverted to DOS. After all, we don't need Windows.

Great use of irony, though, asking a question like that on Yahoo! Answers.
