In the United States, generally speaking, a misdemeanor is any crime for which the maximum penalty is less than one year and a felony is any crime for which the maximum penalty is over one year.

Most states have different "grades" of felonies. The most serious felonies have a maximum penalty of life imprisonment (except for some types murder which in some states carries a potential penalty of death death). Lesser felonies have maximum penalty of a handful of years.

Sentences vary by state and country, and by the crime.

Typically, a misdemeanor carries a jail sentence of up to 1 year, plus often monetary fines.

Felonies typically carry prison sentences of 1 year or longer (up to life) or even the death penalty in some jurisdictions.
