I work at a zoo, not as a keeper, but it seems to me that many of the keepers that work here are not very personable...some are downright rude to everyone. Why is that?

I thnk its just bad luck. As an example, I've seen many friendly keepers in my time.
Perhaps some people are drawn to working with animals because they dont enjoy spending time with humans.
Maybe that could be the case with the keepers at your zoo.

Well IMHO people who choose to dedicate their lives working with animals are people who never had good people skills. It's not that they are rude it's that they might have low self esteem and look rude or standoffish around people because they have their defences up.

Perhaps it's because they aren't paid well, and non-human animals are not good conversational partners.
