Today (July 30th) in Calgary, Alberta we had a blood red moon, it was really facinating, being almost full (full moon was yesterday). Trying to look up this phenomenon, I've discovered the most common cause of such a red moon to be a lunar eclipse. However the last lunar eclipse was in early March and the next isn't due until the end of August.

Since a lunar eclipse is not causing this brilliant red moon, what could it be? This moon is brilliant red at night (10 o'clock-12 o'clock) so it's not the sun shining over the horizon like it does in the early evening/morning.

With the winds blowing from the southwest to northeast at mid level, the red moon is likely caused by a layer of smoke moving over Alberta from fires in the United States.

The moon turns red during a lunar eclipse because the earth, moon, and sun form an alignment so then the suns rays fall on earth which causes a shadow on the moon because of the position the sun light has to pass through earths atmosphere to reach the moon,so the atmosphere scatters the light coming from the sun but longest wavelength of red color passes through it hence resulting a red shadow on the moon

It's possible that there could be some dust or some particulate matter in Earth's atmosphere causing this effect.

Smoke from a large brush or forest fire can affect the color of the moon and give it a red-orange tinge.
