If you travel by air to Canada, you need a passport. They are still working on driving through the borders, but I think that goes into effect next year.

At the current time, you need a passport to travel by air to Canada or Mexico. Starting sometime over the next year or so, you will need one to drive across either border as well. Go to this link for further information: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

You do need a passport, these days. They changed the rules a few months ago.

BTW the passport is actually to get back into the US, it proves citizenship.
