Do you agree with Henry David Thoreau? " I would rather sit on a pumpking and have it all to myself, that be crowded on a velvet cushion.? I just got back with my family from camping for five days at a KOA. The accomodations were great, but there were people everywhere. When I backpack it is far more primitive, but I have my spot all to myself.

Here's my take on it. It is getting harder and harder to find sanctuary from a society that has a need to be constantly stimulated and entertained. Ok let me explain.

If it were say... just you and your wife that had gone out for a "camping experience." I can see the two of you backpacking up that amazing mountain in Oregon and finding a spot in the wilderness to set up camp where you were far away from anyone, anything, anybody that would interrupt the call of the wild. (no that is not a commentary on your sex life) Ok moving right along...........

But it wasn't just the two of you. Whereas you both could be not only entertained by the peaceful serenity of nature and the calm notion of no civilization, your children perhaps require more. At least I know mine did at that age. "What? no toilets?? You mean I have to dig a hole???" "Whadaya mean I can't take a shower? I'm not getting into that stream. It's got "stuff" in it!" "Where can I plug in my iPod charger??" "Mom, I'm bored......... is there anything to do besides stare at the trees?"

So we tend to go to those places that will provide a little of what our young ones need. Isn't it ironic that as we grow older we can't wait to let go of that need??

So if it is any consolation..... your sanctuary will be regained in a few more years..... with a few more populated vacations..... and a few more requests for velvet cushions. But don't worry..... your pumpkin awaits Cinderella. :)

Just watch out for the stem when you sit on that pumpkin.

People are like viruses. They populate and consume all resources until they are gone. Then they move to the next area.

They try to herd us in like cattle, and charge us fees just to see the lakes and the mountains.

I like to go where no one else goes as well, have a huge bonfire, and get as loud as I want, and with no one around for miles.

I HATE camping around other people and their kids and their dogs.

Take a pumpkin into a closet and lock yourself in.

Not for me, I can find sanctuary (and solitude) anywhere.
