As a teacher, I used a great online flash/shockwave activity to help children count the distance of a storm with lightning/thunder but I've lost the link... Maybe someone has the link?

i don't have the link but i think you're referring to the activity where lightning strikes and you count the seconds until you hear thunder. each second represents a mile.

http://www.weather.com has the information you are looking for. but for the flashbang, it would be best to go 1001 1002 1003 then when you hear the thunder divided that by 5, since every five seconds equals one mile.
