In my opinion a 2.5 gallon is the MINIMUM for a Betta!!!
The bigger the tank the better for him
And if you would have at least a 10 gallon, heated, filtered and with live plants, you can keep him with a bunch of other tropical fish as well
Here is a compatibility chart for a Betta

In a 2.5 gallon, you can only have 1 male or 1 female. Females need a group of 3 or more to establish a safe pecking order and a 2.5 gallon tank is not big enough for that many. There are no rules about whether a male or female is better, but there are pluses and minuses to both. Males are bigger and typically considered more interesting to watch, but females are also very pretty and do not get fin rot as easily as the males do. You should have a lid to help limit evaporation and keep things out that might poison the water. I don't know where you would buy a lid that small because I have never seen them in stores, but I would check all the major online stores. You'll also need a heater and a filter. Bettas are tropical fish and live best in water in the high 70s and 80s. Cold water makes them inactive and susceptible to illness. Bettas need soft decorations, so get silk or real plants and structures with no sharp edges. Most major pet stores don't have a big selection of soft plants, but that's where I've gotten all of mine. You can also get them online, if you feel like paying shipping twice as much as the price of the plant :P

too big...lol. A tank can never be too big. That size of tank is perfect. Every fish, regardless of what some "experts" say needs to have atleast 2-3 gallons of swimming space. You are cruel if you keep a betta in even a 1 gallon tank. I would rather kill a betta than see one be kept in a little 4 ounce "container". People only do this because the betta becomes STRESSED and his fins become larger. Cruelty to any animal is in my book the same as torturing a human being.

There is no such thing as too big of a tank. 2.5 gallons is the minimum size tank that a betta should be kept in.

I think the reason you always see them in small tanks is becouse they are always kept seperated or they fight and kill each other. Hmmm, how do they make babies?
Anyway, if you already know that and only have the ONE, wouldn't you be happier with more room to cruse in?
Give the little dude a HUGE tank and cool stuff to swim in, like treasure chests and sunken ships and stuff!

There's not really such a thing as 'too big' a tank. 2.5 gal is the smallest I'd keep a betta in myself.

a 2.5 is great for a betta.
all too often people try to keep them in a little 2 pint bowl or something.
2.5 is the minimum according to me.

That is big enough for ONE Betta, but I'd never go any smaller than that.

No. Simply the size of the fishes growth depends on tank size. Just NEVER put 2 males together, They will fight unto death !!!
