My small town has a Fall Festival at Halloween (or the closest weekend day) -- and it includes Costume Contests, Games, Street Events, etc ... a LOT of fun for all participating!
This is a safe activity put on by the town's businesses and organizations ... including churches. Kids are welcome -- and enjoy all the children's activities for sure. I think of this as a LOT more fun than just going door-to-door and begging for candy -- and that is another reason -- because parents do NOT need to worry that their children are going to be hurt or poisoned or harmed in any other way at the downtown (free!) Fall Festival!
And ... although it is corny -- there is usually a small prize for each age level of the costume contest -- sponsored by the local business people.
What would I dress up as if I wanted to this year --- I really enjoy putting on the costume of some wise elder of a storybook character -- whether it is a wizard or something else. One year I did carve myself a Wizard Staff -- put one of the garden gazing globes on top (which was painted with Glow-in-the-Dark Paint like it was flashing lights -- and yes, I did stuff Christmas Rice Lights inside set to flash too). It is still in the house -- and all I need to do is change the batteries.

We're actually planning on celebrating twice this year. Once at Disney World in Florida at the beginning of Oct., and then of course on the actual day.
At WDW, they encourage costumes, and I always dress up, but I don't want to carry along that much in luggage, so I've opted to try to find something unique but won't take up any space.

Uhmm... well me and my friends usually go trick'treating together [[yes you can say "arent you too old?" and then we chill and have our own little party together. So we can have our own costume party if you put it like that. But yeah, it is still just summer so....
