The general media's perception that dog fighting is a "racial/cultural" thing is moronic. "Ghetto-style" meet on the street dogfights are not representative of the "sport".
Much conditioning, preparation, and planning go into an event.
There are "many" athletes who are involved in blood sports for the "thrill of the fight". It caters to their competitive core.
I witnessed a "roll" (basically a schooling fight, that introduces the pit to the dogs) at which there were 9 NFL players present. There are many boxers, baseball players, actors, actresses, etc. that have attended or been involved in various types of blood sports.
Mike Vick was not a major cog in the "dogfighting underworld". The crimes described in his indictment are not business as usual either.
Mike is probably "guilty" of something, but you know that any conviction will be a lesser charge than the original indictment. There is a lot of gray area in these laws that make it very difficult to prove intent, attendance, or knowledge.

I saw rooster fighting (or cockfighting) when I was young and though it was impressive to see the animals fight for their lives, I do not think it should happen. I knew friends who owned pitbulls and would fight them for money, the dogs seemed mean and even the owners would lament when they lost a fight. It is not right. Animals should not be treated that way.

It's a dog... But I agree that fighting is cruel but I don't think that violators have to go to jail. Because it's only a dog.. Human life is more precious to any number of dogs.. I think though that punishments should still be given in the form of a big fine and community service but no jail time because it's just a dog... Dogs are great companions but human life is more important.

dog fighting is wrong, its animal cruelty and who ever does it or even helps it happen should pay a very large fine and have jail time.

your a damn idiot. they don't like it !...I'm a pit bull owner...and NO it is not in their blood. They were trained to be vicious fighting animals.
My dog wouldn't hurt a flea !
It's animal cruelty period, and he should go to prison, be kicked out of the nfl forever, and all of his property should be seized since he used his home to stage dog fighting.
