This follows from the triangular inequlaity:
|x+y| <= |x| + |y|
write this as
|z+y| <= |z| + |y|
take z = x-y
then
z+y = x-y+y =x
|x| <= |x-y| +|y|
so
|x-y| >= |x| - |y|
