"Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production."
Mass murder, oppression, and all those other lovely things that have come to be associated with communism are not necessities of it. They are more likely to be consequences of a government not implementing communism properly. These things can happen under any kind of government if it is not handled properly.
I think the reason America is "afraid" of communism (or just really hates it) is because communism as an ideology is not separated from the negative effects that are perceived as being caused by it. This upsets me because it implies that those people who support communism as an ideology support oppression and murder. What also upsets me is when people just dismiss something like communism as "evil" without even considering it first. People! It is possible to consider something and learn from it, even if it is flawed, without adopting it as your own ideology!

Could have sworn we DEFEATED the communist threat. So why would we be afraid of it? As for why Americans don't like it? Well for starters, most Americans want to be paid based on their ability and talents.

FYI: You know you're a liberal of you believe that the only reason communism hasn't worked anywhere it's been implemented is because the right people weren't in charge!

i don't think communism is different, However in all forms of Govt monarchy to democracy whoever is in charge becomes a dictator. in democracy the leader is to listen to its people, President Bush is no longer a president but a dictator, he failed to listen to pull out pleas, when democrats chosen to end the war he vetoed our voices, he makes other nations the main idea to avoid insight on our problems. however from most research iv studied dictatorship is the best form of Gov't, however the ones who have achieved this became power hungry. as for Iraq most natives need an iron fist to run it. democracy has mad iraq the next congo and there will be more deaths because our invasion not do our presence, but do to lack of democracy ability to take a foot hold. I hate to say it but Hussain might been only person in this era to run Iraq and he did that by Iron fist.

We understand the problems that having the government own everything causes.

There is only one way to implement Communism realistically in this world, and it means secret police, nationwide poverty, and no freedom. In an idealistic society, it might have a chance, but unfortunately we don't live in one.

Idealists like the idea of Communism because of what it represents: equality in every respect. Realists understand what it becomes: oppression of the masses by unchecked government officials.

Because in the 50's it was said that Communism is a horrible horrible thing and it's anti-American. Therefore the people who aren't educated still repeat the same old mindless insults towards socialistic or communistic governments. Not to say I'm a communist. I disagree with socialism, definitely. But at least I know WHY it doesn't work. And the recycled: "Because of human nature" doesn't cut it!

For starters it takes production for granted. It takes innovation for granted. This is when they try it the economy goes down the tubes.
Then the other thing is that the powers that be are the ones that grab all the power for them selves and use the good of the people for window dressing.

Because most Americans have at least half a brain.

Why would anyone want to live under a system that left a couple hundred million people dead last century in the name of progress?

Read this book,"The Black Book Of Communism"and see if it still thrills you.

"As the death toll mounts—as many as 25 million in the former Soviet Union, 65 million in China, 1.7 million in Cambodia, and on and on—the authors systematically show how and why, wherever the millenarian ideology of Communism was established, it quickly led to crime, terror, and repression. An extraordinary accounting, this book amply documents the unparalleled position and significance of Communism in the hierarchy of violence that is the history of the twentieth century. "
